Those sensibilities are especially evident in André’s inviting and expansive designs for The Emory — where, as he puts it, the interiors aim to create an environment where guests can simply be themselves.

“Historically, the concept of luxury was tied to the ornate and the opulent,” says André, “but now people long for a more relaxed, comfortable sensibility, and much of my work revolves around that idea."

Crossing cultures has always been a part of André’s life – who was born in the east and raised in the west. A lot of his work shows this recognisable blend of cultures, as well as evoking a sense of place.

“The materials used throughout are informed by the tactility of the city, too. The solidity of the marble, the stone, and the hardwood, the abundance of glass – they all juxtapose the richness inherent within the fine details, and the colour palette throughout.”

That attention to detail chimes with another strong sensibility that runs through André’s work – the idea that every design decision is, in his words, ‘in service to a feeling’.

After first understanding the heritage and history behind The Emory, André developed a design rationale that focused both on ‘respecting what The Emory is to London’, and on creating something ‘fresh and new’ for guests. He speaks to how he builds his work like a he’s building a ‘mental collage’.

“[And that is why] there is such a strong ‘apartment’ feeling in the suites, and a vivid feeling of freshness – because each suite is a real living space for every guest.”
